My kids are 14 and 11 (girl and boy).  They both have to bring their clothes into the laundry room on Fri nights or Sat. mornings and then I do their laundry all weekend; and then I dump their clean laundry on their bedroom floors, and they must put it away.  Should I make them do their own laundry?  How do your kids participate in laundry?

  • My oldest is 5 and helping me with laundry is one of his chores. I normally do a bunch of laundry on the weekends, dump it all on the floor in one of the bedrooms, he goes through it and makes piles of everyones things, puts his own things away that don't need to be ironed, and sometimes puts daddys stuff away too.

  • My kids are the ages of yours and a little older.  Mine bring their clothes and sort them into four baskets (reds, whites, light colors, darks).  They do this twice a week.  They also bring their empty hangers at this time.  Their clothes must be right side out (or it gets folded wrong side), pockets must be empty (I get any money I find) and zippers have to be zipped.  I do laundry on the two days designated days.  At the end of the day, they take their clothes and put them away.  I don't collect, sort or put away their clothes.  I am a laundry freak and like my way of doing laundry so no, they do not do their own.

They do know how to do laundry.  They are required to strip their own beds, launder the sheets and remake the bed.  That is how they learned to use the machine.  They know that clothes must be sorted and washed according to colors.  They know that because of the system we have in place.  Occassionally, one of my kids will run his own load of just his clothes.  Mainly gym clothes that he wants to wear the next day in basketball for example.

  • mine are 12 and 10 and it basically the same as the way you do yours. As they get older they will start learning how to throw theirs in the washing machine.

  •   I get the washing machine ready and they get their clothes or towels and washclothes from their bathroom and put them in the washer. I set the dryer. They put their clothes in, empty the vent, throw in a dryer sheet then press the start button. My dd(she's 11) gets her clothes out of the dryer and puts them up. I get my ds's clothes out (he's 9). I make 2 piles on the couch. One pile is for his clothes that I have to hang up because he can't reach the bar in his closet and the other pile is for things that go in his dresser that he puts up. When it's their bathroom items (towels, etc.), I put them on the couch and let them fold and put up.

  • my oldest (3) kind of helps with the laundry lol, just putting it inside the machines for now and dumping her dirty clothes in the hamper. regarding your children i think you can start teaching them to do their own laundry with your suppervision and maybe get something in return once they do it by themselves without having a reminder to do it. just my opinion =-)

  • I  have a house full of teenagers. ( I haven't finished putting them all on  my profile , yet ). I started making them ALL do their OWN  laundry when they turned   13.  I'd teach each one all the do's and the don't's.    As they have gotten older, they ALL  enjoy doing their OWN laundry , because, if it doesn't get done, or if it get's done wrong ( extra bleach r whatever )   they can't get mad at anyone else. ( I have   taught them to go STRICTLY   by the directions. )
