Raising Children with Down Syndrome
I am thinking about getting a bumbo. I had one for my daughter but she never really used it. But I was thinking that with my son having Downs maybe he would get alittle more use out of it. I was wondering if you guys have used them? Do they help with muscle tone? How long did you use it for? If anyone is against them feel free to share why. Thanks so much!

by kalista on Sep. 1, 2008 at 1:20 PMI hear they are great for kids with DS. Nathan's grandpa bought him one and he barely used it maybe 1 month because then he started to be able to sit up on his own. We didn't get it until Nathan was 9 or 10 months, though, so maybe it would ahve been goo tod have it earlier. Also, Nathan did not like being taken out of the chair-- I think the foam kinda sucks you in and he did not like the sensation of being taken out. But we had the one wiht the tray and the tray was nice, his short little arms could reach toys. :) |

by stephb04 on Sep. 2, 2008 at 8:04 AMWe still use ours when we go out to eat. Its the perfect booster seat for it. THe added bonus-we don't bring home any germs from the restaurant high chairs or booster seats! |

by thecarpentersx4 on Sep. 2, 2008 at 1:05 PMI'm glad you asked this question because I have been wondering about the Bumbo myself. I really wanted to try one to see if it would help Landon work his abdominal muscles so that he could gain control of his body easier, to facilitate sitting up on his own, etc. I asked the Infant Educator that works with my son and she said she does not like them. She says that the seat puts the children in an unnatural sitting position and doesn't help work their core muscles. I have, however, asked other families that are part of the local Ds group here and their therapists have recommended it. I guess it is a personal preference. I haven't bought one because the Infant Educator gave us another type of seat to use. She also recommended that the best way to build their core muscles was to let them have as much unrestricted floor time as possible (back and tummy). Actually, since I have been laying Landon down on a blanket with toys around him, I've noticed a big improvement in him lifting his legs, rolling onto his sides (both) and pulling his knees under him. I've tried to do as much floor and tummy time as possible but always had a play gym with toys hanging directly over him (he didn't have to move to get a toy). This seems to motivate him more! |

by brewkid on Sep. 6, 2008 at 12:40 AMHi All! My daughter is 4 and I started with PT at the age of 3 mo. The Bumbo chair is great! It allows our children to sit without our help and they feel independent for the first time. Some children may not like it because of the way it feels. Maybe a comfy blanket will help with the adjustment. I truly believe that when the child figures out that he/she is on his own, they will love it. I didn't bring it to restaurants, but I did bring another chair once my daughter was able to sit on her own. The chair by One Step that is foldable with straps worked well for us. We love to eat out and our daughter couldn't sit in the high chairs or booster seats. She was able to sit in this chair. It took a little work to set it up to be safe but it was worth it. (we didn't bring the tray that comes with the chair, if you use the chair in rest. & not the booth, you won't need it) She loves to eat out now and we don't ask for a high chair or booster seat. We prefer a booth so we can curb her wandering behavior! I also believe that there is a window of opportunity when it comes to the bumbo. If they are too little or too big, it may backfire. So, I guess it is safe to say to get it when they are too small and keep trying!!! H&K
