Since our son has started standing up more it is becoming apparent we need to move him to a toddler bed so he does not fall out of his crib.

How did it work out for you when you transitioned your little one's from a crib to a toddler bed?

He moves a lot in his sleep so I worry about him falling out of the toddler bed, it has short side rails on it but I am not sure if they will be enough.

You can find expandable rails at Target or Walmart. That will help fill in the gap..or to help your son's body learn where the edge of the bed is, you can do what we did with our daughter. put a nice comforter or fluffy blanket on the floor below the open area. If he does fall out, it will be with a soft landing.  Took Abby a few times, be then we didn't need it anymore

When we took Alex out of the crib, we gave him my older son's race car bed (it's a twin size). It works great, because with just a mattress (no box spring), the sides are high all the way around. He can climb in and out of it, but he can't fall out of it in the middle of the night.

In the picture, they have a box spring, so it's a little higher than we have Alex's (by about 6-8 inches).

We did what jjamom did.  Gavin was about 3 years old and his new sibling needed the crib.  We bought the car bed and it works great. The only complaint I do have is that it doesn't teach Gavin how to sleep straight.  He rolls around all over his bed and because the sides are high and he is low to the ground I have no worries.  When I do transition him to a regular twin down the line I'm not sure if it's going to be a problem then or not.

I simply moved his crib mattress to the floor for a few months. After he was used to that we bought him a twin mattress. The mattress is till just on the floor, just in case he rolls out. We will eventually get him a bed, but honestly just haven't gotten around to it since this is working out just fine.
