It is a sausage or pork dish make with steel cut oats.. it is a traditional dish made by German immigrants that settled in Northern Ky- Cincinnati Ohio area.. apparently it is huge thing in that area there is even a goetta festival every year.. I have lived in Central Ky all of my life and do have some German on my dad's side and have never ever heard of this dish until about a month ago when I was searching for meat stretching meals.I am planning to make some today and I was wondering if anyone has ever tried it?
I am from Cincinnati, born and raised.. I worked at a meat market all through college and goetta was a speciality!
Here is the recipe we used...
1 lb. pinhead oatmeal
1 lg. onion, chopped
Salt
Pepper
6 c. water
Pour into bread pans. When cool, place in refrigerator.
Best to slice, wrap in waxed paper and put in plastic bags, then freeze.
When ready to use, thaw and fry in hot oil until well browned.
You can also use 1 pound beef, 1 1/2 pound pork..
Thanks so much.. I was trying to decide which recipe to use.. I was goign to make it last night but plans changed so I may make it tonight or start it tonight and put in the freezer.
How long does it stay in the fridge before slicing?
