Military Wives - ? about Ft. Eustis, VA && Ft. Campbell, KY/TN

My husband has the choice b/t these two stations. We have a son who suffers from severe eczema and we are trying to come to a good decision for him. We are originally from TN and we know that his skin always does well there at home. We've looked and they are about the same climate-wise, same humidity, temperature, dry skin index...but Ft. Eustis has more wind, which is a con. I was wondering what the bases and surrounding areas are like. Any personal experiences are greatly appreciated, sometimes places look great on the online sites for the bases, but aren't as nice in real life. Thank you again :)

I'm voting you move to KY, because that's where I live and we could meet halfway somewhere sometime. Oh what? This wasn't a poll and I don't get a vote? Darn!

I don't know if you plan on living on base, but if you choose Ft. Eustis you should definitely research the schools and surrounding area. My dad retired in Newport News (the town right outside Ft. Eustis), and let me tell you, I was glad to get out of there. My brother still lives there with my dad, and it's just going downhill. A lot of crime/drugs and they live not even 10 minutes from post. I actually worked at one of the Chow Halls when I lived there, and the base itself is nice, but I wasn't impressed with much else. Personally, I think Newport News Public school system needs a serious overhaul, but I only know about the high school.

We are stationed here at Eustis,va and to be honest there isnt much wind here.. right now its not even cold. Some days are cold others are not. Today it was 80 and I had the A/C on....

We have been here since June of this year. Its not even winter here yet, well to me. Its still very green here and not much cold weather. With storms we do get winds but on a average day there isnt much wind at all....

We do happen to live in Williamsburg about 20 minutes from Fort Eustis, and the schools here are good. The area is really clean and very beautiful. Not much crime here. Now Newport News I would not live there for nothing! We did our research and found that Williamsburg was a nicer and safer area to live. We like it here.

Williamsburg is beautiful! It's crazy that it is sooo different from NN and they aren't that far apart =/

I went to high school, met and married my dh in Williamsburg, VA...  My father was a route salesman for Wonder Bread and serviced Ft. Eustis...  I remember it fondly...

Yes, times changes - I would opt for there...  I wouldn't live there though.  I would live in Williamsburg.  Williamsburg / James City County public schools are a good system.  Hell, I went there - Lafayette High School :P

Anyway - dh's grandfather was a retired Army Col and would take us to Ft. Eustis all the time.  Newport News / Hampton is where dh was born and raised.  They later moved to Williamsburg.

Thanks for all the comments girls :)

We ended up opting for Ft. Campbell. My husband came in after we discussed it for a few minutes and he had gone to smoke, and told me there was no reason to waste the time discussing when we already knew our decision but I had wanted to ask other military family members what their opinions were and I did that while he went to smoke.

Ft. Campbell was the top of my husband's "wish list" from the get-go and our other choices were Ft. Eustis, Ft. Hood, Germany or Alaska...with our son's condition and his enrollment in EFMP, he will NOT ever be stationed in Alaska. We're not to fond of leaving the country. And Ft. Hood would be much too hot for our son.

On a low note, this does mean if we do get our orders, that my husband who just got back in Sept will deploy in June, but we've really come to terms with that anyways b/c we didn't know if he'd deploy in Jan when we were due to go to Alaska (before our orders got deleted b/c of EFMP), and with the army, you've got to be prepared for anything and moving and deployments. Although I am sad about it, he will be able to finish his associate's and not touch his GI bill, our son will be in a better climate for his eczema, we will be better off financially and I will be much closer to my in-laws which is something I greatly want. My husband was telling our son who is 2 1/2 that we might be moving closer to his Mimi, but Daddy would have to get back on the airplane to go to work. And he said no and started crying. It broke our hearts. He knew immediately what he meant. :(( It will be harder and easier at the same time for us.

Anyways, enough of the rambling. Thanks again for the comments.

the only one i can commenton is kentukasee i was there when my bil was there before he passed i loved it there i am orginaly from Ca moved to Wa then hubby tricked me into moving to SD the weather is something that took  little getting used to the thunderstorms are beautiful but scared the crap out of me when they first hit the weather was wonderful other then that

i had to reaclamate to all the people though and traffic i am now in an area where you have to worry about combine tractors or deer more then anything else

my sil did move back there after bil passed cause she liked it there calmer then seattle she says which is so true

not sure but there are alot of places to go if you like camping also or just want to take a day drive i tried to mapquest all the harley stores when i drove there

i would move there if i could only beacuse it remindes me of home without the extra traffic of Wa it has trees there

it kinda reminds me of Ft Lewis in a way

YaY You're moving closer to me!!! If you choose to live on the Tennessee side I can tell you that Ft. Campbell has everything you would want for shopping. Other than that I know nothing of Ft. Campbell... But if you choose to live off base ten to twenty miles north... Well Girlfriend I got your back there! I live in Hopkinsville right now and I drive for the Christian County School system.  I can recommend the best schools and  the best neighborhoods... There are some places where rent is 400 a month and then there are places where it's  1200 a month. The Amish are a big part of the culture here. You will find a wonderful mix of 19th century values and 21st century technology. I love it here!!! (and if you like horses I got your back there too!!!!!)
