I've run barefoot a few times recently - just short distances, easy pace - to get a feel for it. I haven't been a runner, so I wouldn't want to push it anyway; I've always gotten shinsplints from any running (since cheerleading in college ruined my shins! LOL) and it's been prohibitive. So far, I'm tentatively hopeful that as long as I don't push it too hard too fast, and allow my feet and legs to strengthen naturally, and learn to run properly, it's going to be awesome. So far so good - no pain in my shins at all, and I've even ventured onto cement sidewalk as well as grass.
You do have to be careful how you land, while not thinking too hard about it, an be observant of the path ahead. I really suggest that each of you - if you haven't done it - take a quick jog barefoot. Just a short distance will reveal how different you land barefoot vs. wearing running shoes. There's a link (in the Links section to the left) on running barefoot, check it out if you haven't!
I'm really excited that I might get to "be a runner!" It's been a dream of mine for so long.
