My dr. explains to pick an hour for every day where you will have time to sit and closely monitor while seated.  Usually after a good meal (i picked dinnertime).  You start at your designated time, and see how long it takes for baby to move, kick, punch, pull, roll, etc. 10 times.  Record how long it takes to feel 10 times every day.  If it takes longer than 60 minutes, call your doctor, and if there are any irregular jumps in the time (like normally it takes 3 minutes and one day it takes 45) bring it up to the doctor.

I learned about it at the Childbirth class I went to.  I see my Dr. next Monday and will ask him about it then, but figured I might as well start doing it now.  I like to be proactive:)

I think its so you know the baby is ok in there doesnt have the cord around its neck getting proper oxygen things like that. Ive never done it and never been told to do it either ive only seen it mentioned in the what to expect books. as long as shes kicking every so often Im not concerned.

I agree that its pretty pointless.  I was just told to do it by my doctor.  Im definitely not religious with it, but am aware after dinner time if she's moving rapidly or not.  If anything it helped me be routinely aware of her movements and not just ignore them, so if there WERE a problem, I'm more likely to be aware of it.

But filling out a chart and regimenting yourself to do this is kinda nutty.

I was told they're more concerned about kick counts with people who are high risk for pre-e and things like that. Usually the Dr's just want to know if your LOs are moving regularly. I'm high risk myself and haven't really done the chart thing. About now I just start noticing the times they start moving and kind of keep a mental check list.

I've never been told to count the kicks, but I am always asked if baby is moving.  I tend to count before I get out of bed in the morning and while I'm watching TV at night., or anytime baby is being active.  I do it a couple times a day.  I almost always get 10 movements in just a few minutes.  It's just a peace of mind thing for me.

I know I have had 10 kicks today, but I have not sat there and counted within an hour.  I am high-risk and on the verge of pre-eclampsia, but my doctor is REALLY laid back and never seems worried about anything so I suppose I take it upon myself to find ways to double-check that the baby is ok.  Maybe most people shouldn't even bother, but I am going to- just to make sure things stay good:)

ill agree. Sometimes I wonder if theres ever a time when he stops moving. I know hes ok in there and even when I dont feel him ALOT he still moves throughout the day. I have been told not to worry unless you havent felt them move for more than 24 hours. well I dont even go an hour without feeling him move so i know hes good in there.

Mainly i think its for babies that arnt as active my DR told me to do it if the baby is lazy. If the baby isnt lazy then dont worry about it.
