My 9mo Pibble has springs for legs. We have been working on teaching her not to jump on people. She's starting to get it, she's very smart, and she tries very hard. I have been turning my back on her and telling her off. When she sits, I tell her 'good off!". But now I am second guessing myself. Should I be turning my back and saying nothing? Is telling her 'off' giving her attention and reinforcing? I have this strange feeling like what is happening is, that she is learning to jump, then sit, then get a praise. Like she thinks that jumping first is part of he equation. What should I be doing differently?
I would just say say YES Good dog. You do not want to reinforce the word "off" Just Yes Good dog.
You can also work on your stay, with her sitting in front of you, this will reinforce that she only get rewarded for having her bottom on the ground.
I use "off" to get my dogs off the furniture when they get up. So I just used NO when they jumped. Didn't have that much of an issue with it though. Also, I knew when they would jump. Our Great Pyr would jump when he got out of the dog run. So I started grabbing his collar before letting him out. That way he couldn't jump. Seemed to work well. Deff don't want your pup jumping on kids or guests.
LOL it is funny because I do not use NO at all with dogs. I use AH Off for jumping up And OFF getting off the furnature. I think dog here No to many times and just like Kids learn to ignore it.
I also use Naughty instead of BAD, when Badger goes after my pant legs AH Naughty, He is very drivey a good thing unless he get my skin.
Eh, I'm not much of a No person. Honestly we don't use a lot of verbal communication with our dogs. It's a lot of hand signals and body language. When I speak they better listen, that much they know. lol So, if I'm in another room and I hear them get up on the couch I yell "off". If I am in the room when they get up I just point at the floor and they get off. I've spent a lot of time on my nonverbal communication with them. I'mr ather proud of it.
So Melina74. Just grab her collar when you let her out of the crate and physically keep her on the ground while praising. For the food jumping you really just gotta make her sit and wait. It about kills our Weim as he's so incredibly food motivated to sit but I make him.
Oh, wanted to add that I worked for a veterinarian who would put his knee up to keep the dog from doing that while reprimanding. Dog claws hurt!
