First of all you need to make sure you are using a crusting buttercreme recipe.  Then it is usually easiest if you put you done cake in the freezer for about 15-20 min and then do a crumb coat.  Which is a thin layer of buttercreme covering the cake.  Freezing it helps to keep the crumbs solid enough that the don't get into you icing too much.  But if it does that is okay because you will let that first thin layer crust and then wait about 15-20 min. (however long it takes to get a good crust) then put your top layer on.  The crumb coat seals in your crumbs so it doesn't get into the top coat.  It is early here so I hope that helps.  Any more questions than let me know.
