I am new to practicing yoga and would like to know does it help you lose weight and any advice for a newbie?  Thanks in advance :)

I would say it does more for flexibility and toning than for actual weight-loss. Doing yoga with your cardio, either on the same day or alternating will add benefit to your overall routine. Just take it slow, and stop if it hurts. There is nothing wrong with modification of poses for those who can't do them either to a restriction or less flexibility.

you can lose weight doing yoga, but it has to be done at a quicker pace, like vinyasa yoga

any physical activity is better than none!  Yoga can help, and it doesn't have to be vinyasa.  I combo of different types would be best I think.  Slow long holding postures for strength and vinyasa for cardio!
