Greetings everyone!
My name is Jill, I am from Michigan and I am the admin of this board. If anyone else wants to help, the more the merrier. I have a daughter entering 7th grade in September. I keep reading over and over many parents needing suggestions, tips and help in getting started with 6th grade. As I said in my intro? Is why this board has been created. Everyone is welcome, but lets keep this sane and respectful. Thank you!
So with this being said lets get to know who you are and where.

Hi Everyone
I'm Deborah and Ialso live in Michigan. My son is also starting 6th grade, at the middle school. My concerns are many. He has ADHD and is dylexic. He has had an IEP since kindergarten and has been languishing in the learning resources center. At the end of 4th grade he was a non reader (less than 1st grade and 29 wpm). I paid for a program that we worked all summer and by the end of August he was at a second grade level at 79 wpm. Guess what? He finished the 5th grade at 81 wpm and still at a 2nd grade level. So I hired another tutor this summer and began another program. She had him up to 5th grade reading level in 3 weeks. He's now reading at 6th grade level and he's also come up 2 grades in math. So I have to wonder, what in world were they doing for 6 years in the resources center?
So we did his IEP at the end of last year and they have him scheduled to have language arts and math in the resources center. I have called the head of special ed over a week ago and still have not heard back. We will be at the school next week because they do a week long, 3 hour a day orientation for incoming 6th graders. Hopefully, they'll be someone there I can talk to. I will not let him go the resources center. I want him in the 6th grade English and Math. They have us scheduled for another IEP the second week of school, however, that would mean that he'd start the year 3 weeks behind everyone. That would be awful for him since he'll have all he can do to keep up.
So I guess you can say that I'm the one who's losing sleep over this transition. The principle at the school is one of these guys who is your friend as long as you go along with his protocol. If you don't, he intimidates and acts like he's god. He's chosen the wrong lady to mess with!
Hi Deborah!
Welcome to our group! I hope we can help you in any way shape or form. Sorry to be so MIA but currently we are vacationing in Canada for another week. We do not have an ADHD child but I do understand your plight when it comes to principals not understanding what is going on around them. I too had a fight with ours and because I am an employee of the system and I feel really cloistered because of it. Stand your ground and dig in. They will give in. Please feel free to post away on any concerns I am really hoping to get this board up and running full speed ahead.

Hello my name is Renda. I have 4 kids ages 12, 11, 8 and 1. My daughter will be entering the 6th grade on Monday, but where we live at in Indiana thats still elementary school which is great, but our son will be entering the 7th grade which is middle school. Our biggest concern is him not being to find his classes. he is adhd and dyslexic, but he gets no special help. He is excited about it but we are so nervous and not ready for the middle school years.
Hi Renda
You son must be one smart kid to have ADHD and dylexia and not need an IEP. My son's tutor told me the other day of a kid she works with who is having some problems in 12th grade. Because he never had an IEP or 504, he may not be able to get any modifications in college. They can get extra time to take tests or even be in a private setting without any distractions. I'm only telling you this because it could get more difficult for him as the material gets harder. I believe the 504 is for modifications and would more likely be a better fit. Anyway, hope this helps.
Hi Renda!
Welcome to the group! This is what we are here for. Comfort and ease of confusion among our children entering middle school for the first time. Here in Michigan my child entered 6th grade feeling confident. When we really got involved with 6, we realized this was a whole new ball game. Got to let the admins and principals know we mean biz. Welcome aboard and post away!
