I hope things have improved for you...I haven't been diving since late 2003, so I'm dried out too! My gear needs some serious maintenance work done on it before I ever get back in the water...that is, if my Xtreme Elle BC even fits anymore! LOL
Well, this group is meant for everyone to talk about their love for diving, even if we can't do it right away! Glad you're here!

hi, i'm dried out and broke too. i also did not intro myself.
my name is Velta. i live in Florida. i'm a Y diver since 1991. but, i haven't been wet since 1997. i was certified in the lake at the Tyler State Park. my gear is in a bag in the garage, i walk past it daily and look at it longing. i go to the aquarium and sit for hours. since my last dive, i've moved to 2 different states, gotten married to a non-diver, had 3 children, and well let's say there's been considerable wetsuit shrinkage.
gee i feel like i'm at an AA meeting.

I feel ya, Vel..."Hi, I'm chick, my last dive was in 2004..." I am praying daily that I will get back on my feet before I get to old to get back in the water!! Let's think positive, okay?

Hey, I'm in too! LOL
Glad you could all join us at this meeting of SDA...SCUBA Divers Anonymous...
I'm Christina, and my last dive was in 2003. Turns out I was actually 7 weeks pregnant with my daughter Anna...found out the day BEFORE we were to leave to go to Key Largo on a dive trip. So we went anyway. We just doubled our safety stop times. I was afraid to tell my OB that I had gone diving while pregnant...I don't think I admitted it to him 'till many months into my pregnancy. But, the trip was already all paid for and it was too late to back out! Well, my daughter turned out to be perfectly healthy, and she loves the water!

LOL! I love it....SDA! That's great.
i read once about one of the trainers at Sea World swimming/training Shamu while she was pregnant. they let her go until she was into her 2nd trimester. they said the whales must have sensed it cause they seemed extra gentle with her.

Christina, i don't blame you, I would have gone too! I don't think there is anything wrong with diving while pregnant, unless you are using mixed air or something...It sure relieves the gravity issue for a while...HA.
Vel, I think I heard that about the killer whales...you know they are mammals and, from what I understand, very good mothers. They sense it like we do for each other....pretty cool, huh?
I hope next year will be a better year for me fiancially....why don't we plan a trip? We could plan it way in advance. That way we would have time to do the refresher stuff we needed and save up some money? What do ya'll think? I am thinking the Keys....Largo, Plantation, West....somewhere like that...or we could just do PC Beach or the springs...that's really cheap diving.
Ya'll tell me what you think...anybody that wants to go is welcome and I'll do the planning....how's that sound? Becky

Well, my OB did say that he thought everything would be fine after I told him. Plus from everything I read, the thing that they worry most about diving while pregnant is that they don't know anything about how a pregnant woman (especially the developing fetus) off-gasses, and that's why we avoided going deeper than 80 ft and did double the safety stop times. I know that it's just a precaution to avoid SCUBA diving while pregnant, but under normal circumstances, I would tend to agree...why take the chance? But, it was a fun trip to Key Largo, and my daughter Anna does seem to LOVE the water! :-)

When I was about 7 months pregnant with my older daughter, we went to Discovery Cove. That's the theme park where you get to interact in the water with the dolphins. It was the coolest experience ever! Each of the people in my group had our own "assigned" dolphin. At one point, we were to give an arm command, and then the dolphin would swim away from us, around the lake, and come back, where they'd lift their head up so we could kiss their snouts (for a perfect photo op)! Anyhow, "my" dolphin did his swim, and came back around, and then stayed in the water, and I could hear all the clicking--he was sounding out my pregnant belly! I joke that he was "talking" to the baby! Who knows? He probably was, for all I know--after all, my older daughter LOVES to swim, can't wait to learn to dive, and also loves all living creatures! On that same trip we also went to Homosassa River to see the manatees. I have heard that manatees also have a sense of when a person is pregnant and are very protective. Unfortunately, during that trip, it was so warm in the Gulf that none of the manatees had come up river, so we didn't get to swim with them. Oh well...

I hear you about being strapped financially! And it's not just paying for the trip...all my gear needs to have major overhauls done on them, since they've been out of the water for almost 5 years now! And DH and I have been out of water that long, so we would need to take a SCUBA refresher course. And...I have a 6 and 4 year old who are too young to dive, so I'd have to bring my friends along (that came with us last time)--the husband is a beginning diver, and the wife doesn't dive at all, but loves to watch/play with the girls. So that would work, but he's been out of work, so it's a financial issue for them too.
I love Key Largo--there's a lot to see down there! My recommendation, however, is NOT to do it during hurricane season (July - November)! Definitely I'd avoid August - October, when the season is typically most active. The rates may be cheaper, but we might end up having to evacuate after just getting there! Besides, the vis is awful right after a storm! LOL
We've just weathered Tropical Storm Fay...got 4 straight days of hard rain. Lots of power outages and flooding around us (though we were fortunate only to have lost power for a few hours).
