you can tell a number is divisible by 3 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 3. ex: 1,464= 1+4+6+4 = 15 = 1+5 =6 yes! 1,464/3 = 488
if the sum of the digits is divisible by 9, the number is too.
you can tell a number is divisible by 4 if the last 2 digits is divisible by 4. 712/4 = 178
and for 8, the last 3 digits.
evens are always divisible by 2, and anything ending in 0 or 5 is divisible by 5.
and 7... subtract 2x the last digit from the previous digits until it's divisible by 7. 371 = 37 -2(1) = 35 = 3-2(5) = -7, which is divisible by 7!
I guess the bill just didn't measure up :)

12 × 8 + 2 = 98
123 × 8 + 3 = 987
