My name is Amy, I have 3 kids 6,4,1. Currently working full time as a nurse but plan on going back to my stay at home mommy days while we are at Irwin. Also tackling a new journey... homeschooling. I'm looking forward to hopefully meeting some of you. We will be moving next month from Fort Hood, we've been here for 7 years and are so ready for a change.
good for you but here you need to drive 3 hours to go to disneyland or hollywood studios but people here are ok if you find the right person to talk to.
Amber,
I think it's that way everywhere you go. To me its like dating, you'll have to get out there and meet people, yeah you'll come across people that aren't a good fit but I always seem to find those few dear friends hiding in crowd.
We actually went to Disneyland this year! It was our first family vacation, the boys had a blast. So when I told them we were moving to California the first thing they asked is if we were moving to Disneyland. LOL.
Thanks for the reply Amber! It's nice to meet you. How long have you been at Irwin?
Hi! My name is Jo and we just pcs here from Ft Hood. Lol. We've been here about a month now. We just moved into our home. I also have a 4 year old and one on the way! Looking forward to meeting you. =)
BTW, anyone here homeschool?
Hi Amy!
I'm Trish, I'm 27 years old and I have a 10 weeks old son named Jack. I've been here for 14 months and this place is all what you make of it. It sounds like you have a great attitude and will do great here. If you stay inside and are anti-social this place can be very isolating - but if you get out there and make some friends it can be the time of your life.
I know there is a big homeschooling community here especially for high school age children since they have to take a bus about 80 miles to Silver Lake since there is no high school on Post. I would try searching Yahoo, I believe that's what they use to communicate.
Welcome to the Desert!
I was going to homeschool my son if I couldn't get him into preschool. I tried to get him into the public preschool for free on post but he has been on the wait list there for 2 months now. I put him on the list before we even got here. Because of our income, he just keeps getting knocked down on the list. It kinda broke my heart because he wanted to go to school sooooo bad! So... I put him in the private school preschool on post. I have to pay for him to go, but he really likes it. He goes part day, so I want to get him in a homeschool routine as well. I want to work with him from home so that he is getting the best of both worlds. We are just getting settled into our home though, so we haven't begun working too much from home other than review for what they send home for homework/practice/reading etc. It's a really good school and they are awesome with the kids! Let me know if you decide to homeschool your preschooler. Maybe we can get together and share some ideas and work together with our kids. =)
Jo, that would be awesome. I've been looking into multiple different schools and curriculums, my current favorite and one I'm hoping to enroll his in is Oak Knoll Virtual Academy, it uses K12.com as it's curriculum. It seems a bit intense but honestly out of all the ones I could review online it seemed to be the most up to date with graphics and engaging for my high tech son. Currently my 4 year old is in Pre K here which I understand they don't have at Irwin. Granted he LOVES school and learning but his teacher said that he had already mastered everything in PreK and was ready for K. So my plan is just to get the K workbooks at the store and find things online for him to do until I can enroll him next fall. Then thankfully it is a work at your own pace if we are still homeschooling. I'm a nurse, not a teacher and have no clue how this is truly going to workout for us so the current plan is just to homeschool until the end of this year and we will see from there.
Does anyone here know someone who works at the hospital on post?? Just curious how I find out what the current openings are and where to send my resume. I went to the website for the hospital but it hasn't been updated for over a year.
Thanks for all the help ladies, hope you don't mind the 20 questions! I'll see you all soon, the movers are scheduled to come in less than 2 weeks!
There are actually two preK schools here on post. There is strong beginings (private and you have to pay for it) and Collin Powell (state funded and free if you qualify). Great things have been said about them both. My son goes to Strong Beginnings and loves it! I also love how much they do with the kids there. My friend has 2 daughters, one at each school and she likes strong beginings better, but says collin powell is still a really good school too. Both are part day (3 hrs) but strong beginings offers a full day program too. Mine goes to part day. I'm not sure about the hospital/resume, but when you get here, I would def go in there and find out about that. They seem to be short staffed here because it's such a small base, so you may be able to get a job here quickly. =D Good luck mama and let me know when you get settled in and we can work with our preschoolers together to get them ready for kinder. Gosh, I can't believe mine will be in kinder next year. Time flys sooooo quickly!!! =P
