There are a lot of nice playgrounds and parks on post and they do community events that you can join to once in a while, but honestly it can be lonely because you're stranded in the middle of the desert. Not to be a downer, I just want to prepare you because I lived on base the first year, and nobody warned me how lonely it could be, and I only had a couple of friends.

We moved to Barstow, which is 31 miles from Irwin, but it's the nearest town and it's so much better than living on post. I recommend getting a house in Barstow because if you want a house on post you have to be on a wait list and wait in their DISGUSTING temp housing and it's awful when you have a baby. I did it! So get a house in Barstow!

Then you can go to Apple Valley and Victorville and do family activities and it's a lot better.

Hey Danielle!

I just moved into Barstow 2 weeks ago from Wisconsin, my boyfriend has been stationed at Fort Irwin for 3 years. I have a 3 year old daughter and I'm looking to make some friends in the area too. I agree with Mandi, though I haven't lived on base I've been there a lot and it is literally smack dab in the middle of nowhere haha which I'm sure you know by now since you've been here for a few months. I'm super lonely here in Barstow too because my boyfriend is alwayssss working :(
