dual disabilities (HOH and DS), have to list only one for school services?
I am having to think about what I plan on doing for Auriana's schooling in 9 months when she ages out of early intervention at 3 years old. I have already started to have to list what type of professionals that I want her to have available to her if she goes to public school. She has dual disabilities and I keep telling them that I want her to have access to professionals for both disabilities, but they are saying I have to choose which one. In other words, if I list her main diagnosis as Down Syndrome...she is offered PT, OT, speech, adaptive equipment. If I list it as hearing impaired (she has only 30% hearing in one ear and 40% in the other... she can not hear speech without hearing aids), then she would be entitled to sign interpreters, and speech. I do not understand why she would not be able to get both sign interpretation, along with PT, OT, speech, and adaptive equipment. Why would they only treat her for 1 of her disabilities? Do you have any experience with sign interpretation with children with Down Syndrome or know anyone who does? At home we sign and speak... I try to sign any word I say that I know how to sign... I am sure I don't exactly do it right, but she signs and speaks too and if you don't know what she's signing a lot of times you can't understand what she's saying. Any info would be helpful. Thanks
