Running into the road

I need some advice. Today was the first day that my two(and almost 1/2) year old and I went for a walk with his baby brother(6 weeks). I carry the baby in a sling so I can hold DS#1's hand while we are walking. Unfortunately, if I let go for just a second(to pick up a binky, adjust the sling, adjust my pants(still trying to get my prepregnancy pants to fit right again...), etc.) he'll take off. Twice today he ran into the road. Thankfully both roads are pretty low traffic and no one was driving either time. But we do live about a block away from a really busy road. Plus, I just don't want him running into ANY road!

I'm really not a fan of the harnesses with the "leash" on them. I've seen so many people yank on them or practically drag their kids so they do have a negative stigma to me. I know not everyone does this so I'm definitely not bashing their use, I just really don't want to use them. So I'm trying to find an alternative. Obviously, tying a rope to his pants would be pretty much the same concept. I don't want to just put him in the stroller because the point of going on walks is really to tire him out a little. He's a ball of energy so we NEED to get out whenever the weather allows!

Any ideas for alternatives that will keep him safe?

I haven't any ideas besides the leash, mine is a monkey/backpack leash. I have NEVER abused that, but I have seen it done. It's a lifesaver though, especially when we go on trips like in a busy airport. Not only does it keep him safe and close to me, it relieves my mind knowing he won't run off. but here's a bump.

I know this is about a month old, but figured since I am new that I would jump in with the most recent post. I have a puppy harness, I don't pull on it, it makes me not stress out and if he does try something I just hold it tight, he may pull forward, but I never pull back, if that makes sense. Anyway, I completely understand why you don't like them, I have seen kids dragged over the ground with them, makes me sick. And I understand needing to get rid of some of the energy! Good luck!!
