At what age did your kids start helping you decorate?

My son just turned 3, and I was thinking that this year he could help us decorate the tree for the first time.  The last couple of years, I've put it up while he napped so it was a big surprise when he woke up.  I think he'd enjoy helping, but I'm worried about him breaking ornaments or getting hurt with the hooks.  Is 3 too young?

  • I think 3 is perfect. My DD is 3, and she's been helping me do things like making paper chains, and holiday-appropriate colored paintings, that sort of thing.

It'll be a blast to do the tree with her, there's so much chaos here that I don't let her do as much as I use to. She loves to be a big girl. Just do the super breakables by yourself.

  • I will let my 2 year old help this year, but we don't have any glass ornaments, just for that particular reason.

  •  I think 3 is a great age. My son started helping us last year and he was 2 then. So I know this year will be even better!

  • My ds has "tried" to help every year, but last year (he was 4) he did a great job helping me decorate.

  • I have 2 sets of ornaments, pre kids and post kids. I bought pretty but no breakable ornaments when my kids were little. I decorated the top half of the tree and I let them decorate the bottom , then when they are not around, I fix the bottom lol. They feel like they are part of the decorating and I get to watch them. My kids are 8 1/2 and 7 this year and I am starting to put some of the pre kids ornaments on this year, they are better now at not touching.

  • Three is a great age, they understand, the word  easy. That helps alot and I have just put the ones that are glass or real breakable up high on the tree, but he enjoys it so much, and he is so proud of how it looks when its done.He inherited the topper job this year, our daughter got to heavy for daddys shoulders so he will realy be in his glory. Have fun with the little ones decorating. They  think so hard on where each thing should go, its funny.

  • as soon as they could attempt it...LOL.   Last year my little one was 2.5 and did a great job.  it's a family affair and we proudly take pics of our tree after they decorate...even those times the decorations were a little lopsided or bottom heavy or whatever....I'd usually "straighten up the tree" for some reason or another so it was a little more balanced but pretty much they do a great job and only need a bit of guidance.  We love our annual decorating the tree pics.  Even have one of Hannah as a little baby....on Daddy's shoulder while he decorates.......she was just a couple weeks old when we decorated that year...it is so cute.
