My husband probably will not be getting anything this year, other than having his credit card taken away. Sounds like your husband actually deserves a gift, so maybe ask his buddies what might he might like.

Im really big into getting gifts for people that only they can use. So this year im thinking of getting the hubby a Gift Certificate to get a tattoo. Hes been talking of wanting one and has none so i thought hmm that is a gift that is just for him. We arnt big tattoo people so it will be a fun gift being im sure ( or i hope lol) it will be the only one he ever gets.
My husaband always puts himself last for clothes and shoes. He always talks about getting himself some nice jeans and some new shirts but never does, so I think I am going to get him clothes and shoes this year.
my hubby is a soldier too but not into that kinda stuff. he is a big ol redneck lol. what he wants is a new pair of carhartt overalls. they are so expensive though i'm not sure

If you know of anyone who can do comic drawings, ask them to make a few, or find some on the internet and make up your own story of the Hero/Service man who has a family at home that loves him very much and is so proud of him for the work that he does. Add in a few pics of you and the kids and let the kids add a page the lets him know how much they love him. Then add a page from you, letting him know that he is your Hero and always will be.
May not be a good Idea, just figured I would suggest it, it would be something he could take with him to remember his family, plus its incorperates something that he likes/comic books.
My DH only asked for 3 things. NHL 2010 an Xbox 360 game, a DVD boxed set Red Vs Blue and a Warhammer kit. We usually just write out a few things and since they are a bit pricey we just get the things that's on the list.
