At Walmart you can get clear glass ball ornaments. (I found smaller ones at JoAnn Crafts.) They are less than $3.99 a box. Then if you don't already have craft paints, you can get those for less than a dollar each. Get at least a half a dozen of your favorite Christmas colors. Then all you do is pull off the hanger and begin slowly dripping in drops of the colored paints, swirling the ball around to make the colors spread. Then put a paper towel over the opening and shake and swirl. Then rest them upside down to drain onto paper towels. After the majority of the paint's dripped out you can set them back in their container on top of another paper towel to finish draining and drying. They take a couple days to drain and dry. Once they are dry you can remove any excess paint that may have gotten on the outside and then put the metal holder back on. Store them in their original egg-crate box.
I have a lousy camera, but the pics below will give you an idea what I'm talking about.

I may get my kids to make some but do them in their school colors. I think that would be neat too.

Last year at school, my nephew had to have a craft project to do for his class Christmas party, so my sister bought the ornaments and paint and let the kids make their own ornaments. She also took some glitter paint and the ornaments turned out great and the kids had a blast making them. Really cool idea.
