Sometimes a "save the date" is best. Then you can send the invites a little later b/c people have already been told about the date. I just did this (see my post above).

It is a bit of a toss up. If I send too early, they forget. If I send too late, they already have something scheduled. That's why I've found two weeks about right. and if it is someone that I speak to regularly, I'll tell them well in advance so they can save the date.
