Smarter Home: Sneaky Storage Solutions

Posted by   + Show Post

Storage. There's never enough. Not in the kitchen, the garage, the bedroom, the family room, the kids room, everywhere you look there's stuff and not enough places to put it all. Imagine what little storage you get in a one bedroom apartment. Lucky for me, I don't have to imagine it. My husband and I just downsized our living arrangements from a two bedroom to a one bedroom and we have a baby on the way. Nevermind the "what are they thinking", almost everyone is saying that, my main concern is storage and how we're going to squeeze as much as possible, without sacrificing style or losing a lot of square footage.

Our first purchase was a white wardrobe-closet. It fits perfect in our bedroom, and has tripled our storage space. At only $115 I thought it was quite  a steal, my husband who spent 6 hours over two days putting the thing together disagrees.

We have had to get creative with storage, and it seems to be working. We have a bookshelf, we stocked with baskets. We have a bench that we're converting into our coffee table. A piano bench converted into an end table. And our old seldom used shoe-rack is now housing our towels and linens. We're also reorganizing things, for example our printer is now in a cabinet with the cable modem and cable box. (No room for a desk in this place!)

What are some storage solutions you use?

I need help in this area! We don't have enough closets. Right now we store everything in our office/guestroom but pretty soon we will be turning that room into babies room. I am really going to have to get creative! Great post!

Bins help a lot!!

We have lots and lots of bins around here.  Bins for toys, bins for baby stuff, bins for diapers.  IT keeps everything organized!

I am a HUGE fan of open shelves with clear plastic containers. That way I can SEE what I need instead of digging around trying to remember where I put something!

Thanks Barbie! Its about time to go to Home Goods again. LOL

 * I have limited closet space also. Ugh!

I am lucky enough in that we have a barn. But who wants to go out to the barn all the time.  Even if it does have electricity! LOL

We don't have that many closets in our house so I have to come up with ways to 'hide' things. I'm glad that I at least have a walk in closet though, we store things in plastic bins in there. I also have shoe organizers for all of us so we have space on the floor to place other things. I use cloth bins on top of the closet shelfs to maintain the 'neat' look!

Our house is the same way. Our previous home had very generous storage so we've had to become creative.  I bought some inexpensive faux travel trunks from Home Goods a few months ago. I have them under a console table that is behind my couch.  We keep a favorite couch snuggly blanket in the smaller trunk. The larger trunk contains some of my son's toys that he likes to play with in the family room.

Our garage has open rafters so my dh nailed plywood to one section.  We now store our off-season seasonal items up there.  Tip: Be sure to write "Box x of y" on your boxes so that you know exactly how many snow clothes boxes or Christmas boxes you are looking for.

I store some stuff in plain site.  On the ledge around our jacuzzi tub, for example, I have a wicker basket with rolled bath towels.  Towels can take a lot of closet space and these are conveniently placed. No more wet footprints on the bathroom floor from the tub to the towel rack.

What about one of those over the toilet towel racks?  That's where the majority of my towels are held

A chest is a great place to store blankets and sheets while it doubles as a piece of furniture!
