McAdenville kicks off Christmas Town, USA

MCADENVILLE, NC (WBTV) -- With the simple flip of a switch on Thursday afternoon McAdenville, NC became Christmas Town, USA.

Until December 26th thousands of cars will travel the two-mile route through town every day.  They'll experience the beautiful lights along Main Street and head up the hill where dozens of homes are stunningly decorated.

Mandy Wood and her family were stringing lights and arranging their large nativity scene just hours before the official start to the holiday season in their hometown.

"It's like living in Whoville for one month every year," Wood said.

This year's kickoff ceremony was moved to a new location.  Instead of in front of the Baptist Church it was held one street over at the newly dedicated Legacy Park.  A large crowd gathered in front of the stage where Christmas carols were sung and Santa arrived on a McAdenville fire truck.

"This allows us to have a little more room.  The other location was great and we sure packed the crowds in there but this new park is going to hold a record crowd this year," said Mayor Farrell Buchanan.

The park is also where special Saturday night festivals will be held leading up to Christmas week.

There is one man in town, however, who has no idea what to expect.  Scott Durham just bought the Village Restaurant in the Center of town.  He's never visited McAdenville at Christmas time but now he has to feed all of the visitors passing through who stop in for a bite.

"I've got extra food ordered and extra staff on.  I have one person dedicated to hot chocolate.  All they will do is to make sure if people want to stop in to buy some hot chocolate it will be there for them," Durham said.
