Smarter Health: Smooth Spring Sips

My husband has a pitcher of lemonade in the fridge all year. 365 days a year, he sips on lemonade. Even in the freezing cold winter. I'm the total opposite. I'm a seasonal sipper. In the winter months, I need cozy, warm drinks...and when the temps heat up and the days are longer, I hanker for something refreshing in that glass (yes, then, I will take some of his lemonade).

I've been thinking of new tastes to sip on, maybe ones that offer a boost in nutrients and good things for all of us in the abode and am eyeing a small blender to make Spring Smoothies. I know, we have to be aware of too much sugar from juice and yogurt and stuff, but I surfed around and found a few that fit the bill.

For all of them, you just combine the ingredients in the blender, blend until smooth, and enjoy!

Almond Banana Smoothie (From Bon Appetit)

2 large ripe bananas, peeled, sliced

2 cups almond milk or whole milk

2 cups ice cubes

2 tablespoons (packed) golden brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Garnish with ground nutmeg.

The Tummy Smoother (From Women's Health Magazine)

1 c peeled, seeded, cubed papaya

1 c frozen sliced peaches

1 medium pear, cubed, skin optional

1 Tbsp ground flax seed

1 tsp sliced ginger

6 mint leaves

1/2 c low-fat Greek yogurt

6 ice cubes

Garnish with mint.

The Baby Protector (From Women's Health Magazine)

3 Tbsp frozen orange juice concentrate

1 c frozen blackberries

2 c peeled, cubed kiwis 2 apricots, skin optional

1/2 c skim milk powder

1 c prune juice, frozen in ice cube trays (or 1/2 c prune juice and 1 c ice cubes)

The Mental Boost Smoothie (From Joy Bauer on Today's Health)

3/4 cup skim milk (may substitute soy, almond, or rice milk)

1/2 banana

1 1/2 cups frozen mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and/or strawberries)

1 tablespoon ground flaxseed

What is your favorite smoothie?

I love smoothies! They go fast here. I like making mine with strawberries, orange juice and bananas, but any fruit in my smoothie is fine with me!

A fave in our house right now is
1 cup almond milk
1 banana
1 cup yogurt
1 cup of frozen fruit
1 handful of spinach (dont taste it)
1 tbsp peanut butter

Sounds yummy. I would have to leave out the peanut butter though :(

Do you use flavored yogurt or plain?

These all sound good! We do a lot of different ones. My favorite is strawberries, vanilla almond milk and baby spinach.
