Smarter Mom: Night Versus Morning

Posted by   + Show Post

As we all know, there is a lot to keeping a family running. You have to stay on top of clean clothes, lunches, making sure your kids have soccer cleats or karate uniforms or whatever...there's just a lot to do, and it can make mornings completely insane.

The key to stopping the insanity? Shift as much as you can to the evening hours.

I pack lunches, lay out outfits for my kids and for me, make my to-do list for the next day, and assemble any school or work-related paperwork and put it in the relevant spot  (work bag, purse, kids' backpack). If I blow it off, I am invariably running around in the morning well after I should have had everyone in the car for school, muttering swear words under my breath and tripping over the dog. If I have put the time in at night, it's smooth sailing.

Of course, that's because I am a night person and do not function well with any sort of higher order thinking in the seriously has taken me five minutes of pondering to decide if I want cereal or toast. If you're a morning person, you probably have no trouble getting up early enough to get all your chores done and can do them efficiently.

Are you a "prep the night before" person or a morning dynamo type? What are your tips to reduce the morning chaos?

I'm a morning dynamo!  I get up 2.5 hours before the rest of my household so that I have some "me" time and I can get a lot of stuff done in that time frame.  I am not a night person so as soon as I have the kidlets in bed, I'm the next to crash!

I'm more in favor of prepping the night before.

I am definitely a "prep the night before" kind of person.  There's always a lot of prep I have to do before church on Sundays, so I lay out all our clothes, prep breakfast (and lunch), gather the bibles and books, pack the diaper bag, get a few toys for ds to keep him busy, and get everyone bathed.  Then, the morning of, we just get dressed, eat, throw lunch in the crockpot, brush our teeth & stuff, and take off :)

Mornings used to be hectic when the girls were little. But now it's not a problem..With 3 in public school they are18, 15 and 13 they are pretty much self sufficient..They do their own laundry, get ready on their own. I have to drive my 15 year old back and forth to school. Then I homeschool 2 so we do schoolwork in our pj's at times. I have a set time to do my housework. And they pretty much cook dinner for us. Love them getting older..

I am a night owl. I prefer to do things in the evening but my dd and dh are both morning people so most morning I am forced to wake up early any way

Yes, I pack kid's lunches and snacks, lay out their clothes, and make my list for the next day. :)
