Being stuck in the house on a rainy summer day is no fun for anyone--but the whole day doesn't have to be a wash just because outside it's raining cats and dogs. Rainy days present a unique opportunity to play inside.
Here are 3 rainy day adventures to try with your tot.
1. Sing songs: "It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring..."
When it rains we sit by the window and sing. The sillier I act the funnier my daughter thinks it is until we're both laughing up a storm. We usually end up singing every song I know but we start with It's Raining, it's Pouring, then onto Rain Rain Go Away and the Itsy Bitsy Spider.
Not a singer? Put on a CD or YouTube and dance yourselves silly!
2. Be crafty: Get out some of Dad's old T-shirts, scrap paper or even white onesies and either washable non-toxic markers or non-toxic finger paints and make a mess, err I mean art. A temporary suspension of the stay-neat rules is fun for both mommy and baby, and having a shirt or picture will always remind your little artist of that special rainy day.
3. Play outside...inside: Take out an umbrella, put on a raincoat and rainboots and play in the rain (in the living room). Help your child develop his imagination muscles by pretending to splash in puddles and twirl around. Feeling extra creative? Make confetti from some scrap paper and shower your little puddle jumper with paper rain.
When imaginary rain play is over have your little one "come in", take off her rain gear and have a snack. Talk about the adventure and look outside for a rainbow!
Do you have any creative games to combat rainy day blues?
My kids love to play video games or watch movies if they are stuck inside during a rainy day.
We get all excited and watch it until it stops then go jump in the puddles!
We like to read, make forts and do crafts.
We play games, watch movies and do crafts on rainy days.
We like to read a lot of books on rainy days and play with play-dough.
We live in Washington state, where every other day is a rainy day, so we just go about our lives as usual.
We would have a jammie day and eat pizza and watch tv. Sometimes we would play games.
We make tent/forts and play camping. Sometimes these will be our movie days and we'll pull out popcorn.
