Beachin' It

We are lucky enough to live in a small farming town in desert country which sits upon a large lake. There are many beaches, and they all come complete with swing sets and jungle gyms, in addition to the sun, sand, and surf that are part of the topography. When summer hits, we spend as much time at the lake as we can. The kids will swim, then run to the park, then come and rest for a water break. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Going to the beach with kids in tow can be an exhausting affair, and it sure was when my kids were all preschoolers. Sand toys and snacks and water bottles and diapers and ALL OF THE THINGS. And then, we had to be in the water with them and help them build sand castles, and do all of the hands-on stuff we do at home, but now with sand and exploding diapers. My kids are all school age, so our beach trips aren't as CONSUMING as they used to be. They help me fill water bottles and pack the cooler with snacks. They pick what beach toys they want to bring along and they help me load the van and unload it at the beach.

Once there, we have a fantastic time. They run off and swim/swing/play while I read a book/chat with friends, then they come to take turns sitting on my lap while we have a snack break. We love to be outside, and we love sunshine, so beach days are our FAVORITE.

(Re: The above photo. I have three children, not eight. We were at the beach with five of my kids' cousins all this week.)

I know that not everyone is a fan of the beach. Are you? If not, what summer activities do you do with your kids?

  • i like the beach but cant spend every day there. we also do a lot of parks, arcades and other outdoor places. the beach is reserved for special days when we can be especially lazy because it really does wear me down and i cant do much else after going...

  • I am not a fan of the beach at all.  We like going to flea markets and anywhere that it's cool inside.  I can't handle all this heat.
