That's crazy! I know someone who worked security at a grocery store who was fired for chasing a shoplifter down. The store manager said he was a liability.

My opinion on this is that the company who fired this lifeguard are in the wrong.  That guy was only doing his job and while he was out of his perimeters, he was still doing what he was hired to do.  I think it's just ridiculous to fire him for doing something good.

Completely ridiculous, and you know that if he had let the guy drown he would have been fired for that. I'm glad he disregarded the rule and saved the guy. 

I'm confident he'll have a new better job soon.
