Happy Piano Month! didn't know September was Piano Month (it is also National Yoga Month and National Chicken Month)? It is...and would you know, by mere coinickydink, my daughter starts piano lessons this month. Pretty cool, huh? She's been asking to learn for a while, but they say the best time to start is around 5 years old, so now that she's five (and a quarter), she's starting to plunk those keys with real instruction.

To help her out, I've been trying to play tons of music. All featuring great piano guys. Of course, the classical stand-bys - Chopin and Mozart  -- are in heavy rotation, as has the soundtrack to Shine (the movie about pianist David Heltgoff), but there are all different kinds of fabulous piano greats in all genres of music. If your kids are into the piano or just for kicks, check out whom I've been playing for her.

Dave Brubeck

Billy Joel

Ray Charles

Chick Corea

Nora Jones

Diana Krall

Thelonius Monk

Alicia Keys

John Legend

Elton John

Regina Spektor

Jerry Lee Lewis

Do your kids take piano lessons? Do you play piano?

I've done a little bit with my 3 yr old.  She loves music, but doesn't quite have the sense of the beat, yet.

I took lessons on and off throughout my childhood. I intend for my son to take at least a year of lessons to get a good grasp on musical theory.
