Smarter Home: Chili recipes for chilly days

It is cold out there, folks.  I mean, cold, like freezing, like can't feel your ears, like your kid's boogers are frozen in her, was that too much? Okay, you get it. It is cold out. Granted it is January, so it is appropriate season-wise that it is cold out. But, how to warm up? One of the best ways I know: eat something warm and cozy. Like a big bowl of chili. Want to try a new recipe or two? I knew you did! Here's a few I'll be trying as I shiver in my Snuggie on the couch

Turkey and Bean Chili from

1 cup prechopped red onion

1/3 cup chopped seeded poblano pepper (about 1)

1 teaspoon bottled minced garlic

1 1/4 pounds ground turkey

1 tablespoon chili powder

2 tablespoons tomato paste

2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1 (19-ounce) can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained

1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained

1 (14-ounce) can fat-free, lower-sodium chicken broth

1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro

6 lime wedges

Heat a large saucepan over medium heat. Add first 4 ingredients; cook for 6 minutes or until turkey is done, stirring frequently to crumble. Stir in chili powder and next 8 ingredients (through broth); bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes. Stir in cilantro. Serve with lime wedges. Tip: To save time, chop off the top of a washed cilantro bunch rather than picking individual leaves. The thin stems toward the top are very tender.

Award-Winning Chili from

1 (14.5 ounce) can stewed tomatoes,chopped

1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste

1 carrot, sliced

1 onion, chopped

2 stalks celery, chopped

1/4 cup white wine

1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes

1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper

1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper

1/3 cup bottled steak sauce

5 slices bacon

1 1/2 pounds ground beef

1 (1.25 ounce) package chili seasoning mix

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained

1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro

1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

In a large pot over medium-low heat, combine tomatoes, tomato paste, carrot, onion, celery, wine, pepper flakes, bell peppers and steak sauce. While tomato mixture is simmering, in a large skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crisp. Remove to paper towels. Cook beef in bacon drippings until brown; drain. Stir chili seasoning into ground beef. Stir seasoned beef, cumin and bacon into tomato mixture. Continue to simmer until vegetables are tender and flavors are well blended. Stir in beans, cilantro and parsley. Heat through and serve.

Southwestern Chili Con Carne from

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 green bell pepper large diced

1 red bell pepper large diced

1/2 cup red onion, large diced

2 1/2 pounds ground chuck

4 tablespoons chili powder

3 tablespoons ground cumin

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

2 teaspoons kosher salt

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

3 Roma tomatoes, diced

1 (15-ounce) can soy black beans, drained and rinsed, optional

2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add peppers and onions and cook until slightly tender. Add the ground beef and spices and cook until browned. Skim off excess grease. Add the diced tomatoes and soy black beans and simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. To serve, garnish chili with cilantro. If desired, top with shredded Cheddar or Jack cheese, sour cream, and sliced scallion tops.

I heart chili! My mom makes hers every other Sunday and invites us over for some. TFS these yummy recipes can't wait to try them!

My DH is the Chili master in our house. He always adds just a hint of cinnamon, it's very good!
