Bad Wine?

How can you tell if wine is bad or not?

I just got a bottle of wine from a friend...its from 2006 and she said that she is not sure if its bad or not.

Its my understanding that wine gets better with age.

Am I wrong? How can I tell if its bad?

Not sure, but am interested to know.  We've been saving a bottle of wine that we got on our honeymoon.  We were going to drink it on our 5th anniversary, but didn't.  Then it was the 10th, still didn't.  Now we're waiting for 15 yrs....

The only way to determine whether the wine is bad is to taste it. If it starts to have any hint of vinegar or sourness, the wine is bad. Some wine (types of red, especially) get better with age, but it depends on how the bottle is stored (in a cool place where the temperature remains consistent and doesn't fluctuate), if the cork is intact, etc.

If the cork crumbled when I used the cork screw...is it an indicator that its bad?

Not necessarily. How does it taste though?

You have to open it, smell it, taste it. If it is bad you will have vinegar now.

Smell it. If it smells like vinegar you don't want to drink it. Since it is unopened, it will hopefully be good. I've only had open red wine go bad
