  Grocery Shopping Without a Calculator

Check how much an item costs per ounce, pound or other unit of measurement. When you comparison-shop by unit price, you save. For example, if a pack of 40 diapers costs $13, that’s 33 cents per diaper. But if you buy a box of 144 diapers for $35, that’s 24 cents per diaper. You save 27%! (Of course, buying more of something only saves money if you use it all. If you end up throwing much out, you wasted money.)

Thankfully most of the stores I shop at show a unit price per item or per lb. on the sales price tag.

I've found that when I total things up as I go, I spend less money. I stop shopping earlier, also I can keep an eye on the register and make sure I'm not getting overcharged.

I use my phone but totally use the calculator when I'm shopping.

I can do it in my head but I agree. I have bought things in interesting amounts due to this.

Our grocery store labels give the price per unit of measure.

I have my phone out while shopping for exactly that purpose!
