How would you handle this?

We visited my mother in law and father in law last week.  My mother in law informed me that she was "taking up" for my son (Levi...he's 6).  When I asked her what she meant, she informed me that he'd dropped a piece to a dremel tool into a little hole on the patio table, so she told him not to worry, that she would just tell his dad (my husband) that she did it.

I told her that it would've been fine for Levi to tell the truth and that he wouldn't have been in trouble.  I then talked to Levi afterward and told him that no matter what...even if an adult tells you to lie...you always tell the truth.

I know that my mother in law has trouble with the truth and for some reason has a need to be a martyr, but I don't want her encouraging my son to be dishonest and sneaky.  What do you all think I should do if this kind of thing happens again?

Do as you're doing . .truth/honestly comes first,
Let her know what you told your son & she doesn't need to lie/cover up for him
Less trouble that way as well for him :)

be honest and matter of fact with her. let her know you dont teach your son to lie that he would get in trouble for that.

well honesty is the best policy!  & though the truth may hurt & even piss some people off, letting her know your feelings, your stance on the subject is the best way to approach it.  may not be the easiest though. ;o)

Do what you're doing, maybe tell your mother in law that you'd rather your son just tell the truth, rather than having her "take the fall" and then tell the truth a week later.

That's WEIRD. "Oh don't worry, I'll take the fall there guy"  *one week later* "You know when I said I broke the window? Yeah it was really him" WTAF!?

I think you handled it well. Maybe if it happens again you could tell him that in front of her.
