 not just reading but all skills tend to decline over summer if kids don't keep their brains engaged.  that's why schools spend the first few weeks of school rehashing what the kids learned the previous year, at least in elementary school.  there are many summer workbooks out to aide in keeping their brains active.

My teen has to go to school 2 times during the summer (set days) & take a test on 2 books the read that summer. I think it is great. My son I have to push to read. My youngest dosnt know how to read but is learning.

my mom had me make copies and read and stuff every summer in the morning ever day, and then we had the rest of the day to play.

my boys have to read as they have a report due the first week back to school over the book they read during summer break !! but generally my boys like reading !
