He's Deaf

Tonight is always a hard time.

Trick or treating is so much fun but not that easy on my four year old. We went out tonight with him dressed as a little blue monster. He was so happy with his bucket. He ran to the door and signed trick or treat and people were very confused. His older brother kept saying the words for him and then saying that his brother is deaf.

Half way through the night I wanted to take out my eyeliner and write "I'm deaf" on his forehead. He was good though. He signed to everyone perfectly, always said thank you, and even said thank you for candy to many people. A few people gave him more candy when they finally got it. He loved that part.

I love my little guy. I love that so many people took the time to find out why he wouldn't say trick or treat. There are still good people in the world.

So please be understanding if little ones don't say the words right away or don't act like what you think they should. It might be more than you think.

That has to be frustrating for him (hopefully he's still too young to realize it) and heartbreaking from a parents point of view. It's wonderful he has such a helpful big big brother :) I'm glad they had fun trick or treating!

Yes. I am hard of hearing and autistic so sign was my only real way to communicate for years. I didn't really speak much until I was about ten years old.

I must live in a weird neighborhood because no one here cares if a kid says Trick or Treat. Are you in a costume? Did you come to my house? Here's some candy.
