Slippers are awesome, I think. They keep your feet so warm and cosy, they help kids not slip in socks and stockings, they save you money by avoiding wearing through your socks and stockings quickly, and they keep your floors clean if you make a point to keep them by the front door, and ask people to take off their street shoes and boots when they walk in, and put on slippers instead.
My aunt once gave me a housewarming gift that I loved; it was a very large slipper made out of cardboard and covered in terrycloth, with the word WELCOME stitched on it, in large letters. And inside, there were about 4 or 5 pairs of (cheap) thin slippers in different sizes from kids' size to large men's, so that visitors in our new home would have slippers to wear when they walked in, and keep our floors clean and also feel really comfortable and welcome. I loved it! Slippers make great gifts I think, and there's no better time than now ,when it's getting cold and muddy and the holidays are near, to look into some of the options out there.
Old Navy has some really cute ones for women and kids, like these cable knit ballerina and sock style ones you can find in four pretty, different colors here : http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?vid=1&pid=920164002 and here http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?vid=1&pid=920163022
And these monster foot ones, (for the little monsters in your home, of course!) which look super cosy and cute:
(And I LOVE that these come in different monster options, like Wild Tiger, Gorilla and Green Bird. Ha!)
I have looked forward, for many cold winters, to wearing my shearling LL Bean slippers which have a rugged sole and feel more like shoes, but are SO warm and soft inside (and much more affordable than the Ugg versions I saw recently in a shoe store, which were similar looking, but cost almost twice as much!)
Boden has some very hip slippers right now as well, like these polka dot ones with a bow http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/Womens-Nightwear/AR587/Womens-Knit-Spot-Slipper.html
And these suede moccasin slipper which are on sale right now http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/Womens-Nightwear/AR587/Womens-Knit-Spot-Slipper.html
For some fancier, more luxurious slipper options for the whole family (as gifts perhaps?) check out the great selection at Orvis here http://www.orvis.com/store/product_search_tnail.aspx?keyword=slippers
