Haircuts and tips - what's the standard?

So I went in to get my hair cut this week, and as always, I felt confused when it was time to pay. I'm never certain what I should leave as a tip!

I usually try to consider whether it's a basic haircut, whether I had a shampoo, whether I was decisive or needed a lot of advice... But honestly, it's just a shot in the dark most of the time.

How do you decide? How much do you think is an appropriate amount to tip on a haircut?

I give 20% if everything was good and my experience was pleasant.

Standard is 15-20%, based on service. I have been with my hairstylist for a long time though, so I typically give her more like 20-25%, because I love her so much.

Well, I probably don't tip enough, but when my kids get their haircuts, I tip $2 each.

20% of paid services is what's considered standard if everything went well and go from there

I never know either. And even more confusing for me, I usually go to people that cut hair out of their own homes. So I'm not sure do I tip them? They're charging what they want for the service right? and they aren't paying chair rental. I do tip, but it's just confusing to me.
