We got ducks last week! Five Ancona ducklings, to be exact. They're unsexed, and we won't know for another week or two, but we're hoping that at least half will be females so we can get some eggs.

Without further ado, please meet Dyna (aka Duck Dynasty), Tuffy, Dixie, The Hulk, and the duck my husband still hasn't named...!

Has anyone here ever eaten duck eggs?

What made you choose ducks for eggs over chickens?

Duck eggs are amazing!  When I had my homestead we kept the duck eggs for ourselves and sold our chicken eggs.  The duck eggs have a dark rich yolk that is so decadent.  Just remember that if you are baking with them, each one is about the size of 1.5-2 chicken eggs depending on the breed (I'm not familar with Anconas).

As if you need any extra reason to love ducks...did you know that they will help keep your yard area free of parasites?  They will eat the larva near water sources where it spreads and completely digest it.  Sorry, if that gives you an "Eww" moment, I think it's awesome.
