Shot or no

I am still in limbo as to if I should get my 3 1/2 yr old the shot or not. I have a almost 4 month old baby girl at home and do not want her to get it or my son (the flu) I hear so many bad things about the shot and I did believe that god made our bodies to take care of us naturally but this stuff scares me. My 19 yr old son in collage went to the ER last night has he has been dealing with a runny nose, cough and low grade fever also got sick 2 times. he was home this past weekend. they. They did not say he has h1n1 but the flu that is going around... I think they should be more detailed on this as both are going around. Has anyone given their kids the shots and have them come down with the flu still?

Thanks

Tammy

Tammy,

Hugs to you and your family.  I hope your son is recovering.  Our pediatrician stated that 95% of flu cases right now are H1N1, and the seasonal flu is pretty rare at the moment.  Unusual too.

We decided to get the shot for two reasons.  My 2 year old daughter has asthma that acts up whenever she is sick.  That may not be often, but when it does, it requires an emergency room visit and has been scary.  We actually now have a pulse oximeter and nebulizer at home to make sure we can do as much as we can, as quickly as we can.  The thought of adding H1N1 into that mix sounds particularly deadly for my daughter, so we got her vaccinated as soon as we could.  My husband had to wait in line for us at 5 am at a public clinic, but it was worth it to us as parents and i'm so glad we had his support.

Keira's pediatrican stated that she would need the shot, not the nasal spray due to her asthma (he had no objections to healthy children having the nasal spray, was just for her case).  Since he had no idea when he'd get it in the office, he encouraged us to get her vaccinated at a clinic if we could.  They still have not received vaccine shots for children 6 months to 36 months, and its been almost 45 days since they expected it, and since her 2 yr checkup.

Keira had no reactions, but then I didn't expect any either.  Her doctor said that the ingredients are exactly the same as the seasonal flu (well tested), just with the h1n1 virus instead of the seasonal strains.  He stated they have to procure different virus strains every year (usually type A strains just like the H1N1 is) and put it in the same base ingredients, and that the H1N1 is a different virus just as the seasonal strains are each year, so felt it was safe.

Bless you and your baby, and your family.  I wish you well and hope you all stay healthy.  Don't forget that you are in a high risk group too...as are all caretakers of children under 6 months of age.  Please consider the vaccine for yourself.

Lara, that is a great response and your info is all correct.  The vaccine should be as safe as the seasonal flu vaccine.  It is made the same way.  And everyone keeps saying this vaccine is SO NEW! But, actually the seasonal flu vaccine is new every year.  So if you are comfortable getting the seasonal flu vaccine then you can feel just as comfortable getting the H1N1 vaccine.  To the OP, Tammy.  Only you can make the decision to vacinate or not but based on my experience and research I would vaccinate your whole family.  Good luck with your decision.
