Go Digital, Get Organized Challenge Day 1: Back It Up!

Thanks for signing up for our Go Digital, Get Organized Challenge! Today's assignment is: back it up. Your computer, that is.

Start getting in the habit of regularly backing up your computer(s) so you don't run the risk of losing important information should your computer die -- especially since you're going to be utilizing your computer to organize various aspects of your life! You can find more details on backing up your computer here

Do you currently back up your computer? Have you had any instances where you've lost info in the past?

It’s easier to keep track of everything -- and everyone! -- when everything and everyone is on the same page!

Today's activity is to sync all your gadgets. Get all your calendars, email, etc. updated on your computer(s) and other devices so you’re always up to date, no matter where you are. See how you can sync up your whole family here.

What devices will you sync with your computer(s)? If you're already n'sync, do you have any tips for other moms? Please share!

Most moms take lots of photos, for sure. But do you have photos on your camera, on your phone, and on your computer in various, unorganized files that you haven't done anything with yet? Well, today's the day to do something about it!

Today's assignment is to organize your photos. Label albums, delete the pictures you don't want, print the ones you love (and frame them -- or make a note to get them in frames this week!), send them to loved ones, transfer photos off your camera and phone and save them on your computer (and go through and organize & delete if you have time!) and/or on an external drive or disk. Don't forget to back it all up when you're done! Then make a point to do this every time you transfer pictures so you don't find yourself with disorganized photos again!

Do you take lots of pictures? How do you stay on top of organizing them?

Your computer is a great way to keep track of your life. But your desktop or laptop can get messy just like any other area of your life. Clearing the clutter on your computer is the real first step in getting organized, digitally! So today's activity is to clean up shop!

  • Look through all the folders and files on your computer and delete the stuff you don’t want or need.
  • Go back through and combine and reorganize whatever you can.
  • Label folders and files clearly so you know exactly what’s in them.
  • Follow these steps to truly "clean out" your computer. Bonus: Your machine will run faster!

How cluttered is your computer? Got any great organizing tips to offer?

Today's activity is go digital with your to-do list! Get your whole list in one place where everything else is, too -- your computer!

This way you can easily type up and edit your list, categorize it, color-code it -- whatever! -- without wasting paper! Of course you can always print it out and take it with you, too. OR get your list on your phone! That way you can check things off without having to dig for your pen and paper. Try Remember The Milk, an app that allows you to make lists and access them from anywhere, integrate them with your calendar, share tasks with family members, and set up task reminders -- pretty sweet!

How do you currently manage your to-do list?

Getting your finances in order can be a tough task, but your computer can be a huge help. Today's activity is to organize your financial life, electronically! Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Create a budget
  • Set up automatic bill payments and savings deposits through your bank's website
  • Use online tools to make managing your money MUCH easier
  • Organize all your passwords
  • When you have time, go through any and all of the papers, statements, notices, receipts, etc. that you have and separate them into three piles: file, toss, shred. Then file, toss and shred! :)

How do you currently manage your finances? Any great tips to share?

Today's Go Digital, Get Organized activity is to update your calendar! Go through your computer's calendar month by month and update it with birthdays and other important dates like pay days, Dr.'s appointments, vacations, school functions, etc., etc. -- and set up reminders! You can even set reminders for holiday savings plans and shopping (don't forget to mark Black Friday and Cyber Monday!), spring cleaning, school-supply shopping -- the sky's the limit!

Is your calendar up to date? What kinds of things do you include on it?

Go Digital, Get Organized Challenge Day 8: Get Ahead of the Holidays

Do you send holiday cards and/or gifts every year? Today's activity is to find your list and organize it!

Make sure you have all the right addresses, email addresses, names of kids, spouses, important dates like birthdays and anniversaries, etc. If your list is not on your computer, digitalize it! Be sure to name it something obvious and store it in a "Holidays" folder. And don't forget to back up your computer!

Then go back to your calendar and add anything you might have missed. While you're at it, you might even want to start a gift ideas list.

Do you feel like the holidays sneak up on you every year? What are your best tips for tackling holiday tasks ahead of schedule?

Today's activity is actually not about what's on your computer, but what's around it -- it's time to get your tech gear in order!

Got a printer that doesn't work? Fix it, toss it, or try to recycle it! Clip wires together with binder clips or twist ties, find storage for chargers and discs, and recycle whatever doesn't work or isn't used anymore. Consolidate discs. Check out what's on your portable USB drives and delete what you don't want, toss what doesn't work, and label them if you have to. Get creative and organize in a way that everything has its place -- and anything that doesn't have a place gets the boot!

Is your computer desk neat or in need of a little help?

Email is a beast all its own. And today's the day you're going to get yours under control!

Go through your inbox, sort by "from," and start deleting and archiving! As you go, delete the spam and anything you don't want or need anymore, and unsubscribe from promotional emails you never open. Don't spend more than 10 seconds reading an email, and if you're not sure after 10 seconds, flag it and move on. If it's something you can quickly and easily respond to, do so, and keep going. When you're done, go back to the flagged emails and take care of those. Create folders and subfolders as you go along and name them things that are obvious and will make sense when you go back (e.g. Bills, Soccer, Summer Program, Receipts, etc.)

When you're done, promise yourself you'll stay on top of your inbox!

Got any tips for organizing your email? Please share!
