I thought I'd post incase people had not heard yet. I went to the pedi today for his 2nd flu shot and I was supposed to get his MMR, but I was going to delay it longer. The pedi informed me that our area is having a massive outbreak of mumps right now, so I decided against it. Over 1,000 cases already... mainly in the Orthodox Jews. It started at a Jewish boy's camp in upstate... and a lot of reported cases in Rockland as of 2 days ago. Now it's spread to NJ and into Brooklyn.. especially places where there are clusters of Jews (Monsey, Williamsburg, etc). Anyways, I wanted to update everyone incase you didn't hear! My pedi said the incubation period is a few weeks, but the vaccine kicks in in 7-10.. so my son should be fine. We went to an indoor playplace in a mostly Orthodox area this weekend, so that made me feel better! I thought this would be good info for those who vaccinate and those who don't.. or especially those who delay vaccinate like I do with select vaccines. If you're going to get it eventually.. this may be a good time. If you aren't.. you might want to avoid certain areas till it blows over.
Good information to have since I live in Northern BC. My kids have all been vaccinated, though. I will have to pass it on to my Orthodox friends in case they don't know.
I live in Hudson County.. but my pedi is in lower Rockland. I was surprised I didn't hear anything about it.. she said it has been all over the news and they are even getting calls from other countries and nationwide about it at their office. Crazy.

Thanks for the infor and my had his shots in Dec and not break out here in South Jersey.
I just saw this: http://www.emaxhealth.com/1506/22/35501/cdc-largest-outbreak-mumps-2006-new-york-new-jersey.html
.... apparently in NJ it's mostly in Ocean County. So around Tom's River area. I didn't realize it has been going on since August.. I guess it's just blowing up more now. I read that 30% of cases don't have symptoms and are just carriers. & that 20% of kids who are vaccinated don't make proper antibodies. Most of the kids coming down with it have been vaccinated! Scary. If we're already over 1,000 and a thrid of the cases we didn't know about from lack of symptoms.. that's a lot! The CDC is releasing new numbers this week.. but thanks to the vaccine I guess this outbreak is only 20% of what it would of been.
Thanks for the update. This is probably why they make people get titers when they go to college. When I went to nursing school, I had to have titers drawn despite the fact that I had proof of my immunizations.

Since my family and I are orthodox Jews I knew about this a while ago. The kid who originally got the mumps got them in the UK where there was a big outbreak.
I don't know of anyone in our community who has it. But my friend in her community down in Lakewood NJ knows some kids. And her cousin in Montreal's son also had it.
If I hear anymore information about it, I will try to inform you ladies.
