Zyrtec for children?

C has been miserable the past few days- on and off fever, irritability, stuffiness- I chalked it up to teething, but took her the pedi on wednesday anyway. Her chest and ears were all fine, they think it's just a little cold. Today she has been inconsolably crying all day, so Michael took her to the pedi again. They said her throat is red (no strep, just sore), her gums are tremendously swollen and they think she may have a touch of seasonal allergies. They told us to keep with the Tylenol/Motrin and they told us to give her some Zyrtec.  I just looked up info/side effects online and holy shit it's scary.  I just can't give it to her after what I've read.

Has anybody had children take this? I've read only negative things about it- it changes personalities, withdrawls are horrifying, sleeplessness or making them unconcious.

Our ped had recommended Zyrtec too, he told us to give it to her before bed.  Hmm...

We never did, I jsut wasnt' comfortable with it.  Glad I didn't now!

How old is she again? I hate giving meds to my kids. There are so many side effects. Keep in mind all the meds that have changed their recommendations to "talk to a doctor if your child is under age 6".

Have you tried the Netty Pot? A humidifier? You can add some menthol oil drops to it to help it be more soothing.
