So incredibly sad. I don't understand how a life guard and the parents...let alone anyone else didn't see this happen! The park is right near me, its TINY, and always has people there.
LAFAYETTE —A four-year-old boy drowned in the Lafayette Town Pond today in what officials are calling a tragic accident in this tight-knit farm community.
"It tuned out to be shallow water. He was noticed and found after reported being missing," said township Mayor Gregory Corcoran. "It's a very, very sad situation. It's the first and the hopefully the last time this has happened."
Corcoran said there was a lifeguard on duty and about ten people in the water at the time of the drowning, which authorities estimated to be shortly after 3:30 p.m.
When the boy was discovered, emergency personnel administered CPR. The boy was transported to Newton Memorial Hospital where medical personnel attempted again to resuscitate him unsuccessfully.
"It's a very small knit community. It's a farm community so everybody knows everybody else's business and everybody pitches in," Corcoran said of the Sussex County township. Neither Corcoran nor the State Police, who are investigating the drowning, released the boy's identity.
Corcoran had not yet spoken to the family but said, "I'm sure that they are devastated."
