OK! I am new to this whole thing called military and being a mom to a son who is in the army so I have a question for the experienced ones.  IF the army can plan large attacks and do what they do then why can't they type my sons orders up correctly and send him to the correct station for duty?!

He was home over the holiday and it was wonderful seeing him. He just graduated AIT. I am reading his orders while he is home and it clearly states that he is to report for duty to Ft. Story, Virginia. He gets there last night only to find out that they are not expecting him. That is was suppose to report to Ft. Eustis, Virginia 50 miles from there. AND to top things off he was not suppose to pay for his flight or the cab ride. WTH!!!! Now I am waiting to hear from him this morning. They were suppose to take him to the other base this morning. I know the government has their heads up their ass most of the time but come on!

Has this happened to anyone else? confused

Not sure why his orders are written wrong but those 2 post are not far from each other actually just the next city over. I am from that area of VA and last time I checked all the Army post there are linked kinda, all info comes from Eustis. Sorry I am not much help but thats all i know.

there could be a lot of reasons why this happened.

When my DH got to Germany last year, his orders said he was supposed to be at Graffenwoer. Well, his unit got orders to go to Schweinfurt instead...so shortly after DH got there, he had to go to Schweinfurt. Some of the guys who had not gotten there yet reported to Graf. only to be told they were supposed to be in Schweinfurt...so someone  had to go pick them up...and Graf. is at least a 2hr drive from here (Schweinfurt).

And yeah, he never has to pay for airfaire if is for him reporting to a duty station...he will get reimbursed if he has the receipts saved.

Ok, I don't know much about the VA posts, but my impression on Ft Story has been that it is part of Ft. Eustis. It sounds like just lack of keeping new Soldiers informed about how the Army works.

Number one... the Soldier will have to pay for his cab ride, but will get reimbursed. But ALL military flights are paid for by the Army. When he got his orders, he should have been sent to the military travel office.

Now, as far as his assignment orders... here is how Ft. Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield work. You can recieve orders assigning you to Hunter Army Airfield, however, you still have to report to Fort Stewart for inprocessing. During your inprocessing, you have to go to the assignments section, where they will actually give you proper assignment orders to your individual brigade, then your brigade will actually assign you to your battalion. My husband had orders to 1st Brigade when he got here, he was actually pinpoint assigned (he was contract assigned to a specific unit), but they sent him up to HAAF instead. They wound up having to bring him back down to Stewart due to his contract, but if not for the contract, he can be sent anywhere.

When I was up in Alaska, there were three duty stations up there... Wainwright, Richardson and Greely. All fell under USARAK command. We routinely had personnel arrive at Wainwright, inprocess a day, then get moved down to RIchardson, and vice versus. It was just a matter of all three posts fell under the same command and personnel could be moved around willy nilly as assignment saw fit.

So this is where he (and you) just have to get used to the Army way... hurry up and wait, and learn to be like Gumby... flexible as heck! And your son just needs to get educated on the ways of questioning every time they tell him to spend his money (I know a lot of chains of commands will be like... go buy this item and that item, and I am like - no, I am not spending MY money on military equipment I am not issued and is not meant to be purchased with my clothing allowance - clothing allowance is to REPLACE bag issue items... ACUs, boots, Class As, and buy NEW uniform items as they are redesigned and added to BAG ISSUE... old PT uniform to the new pt uniform, when we go from the greens to the blues, BDUs to ACUs, etc). He will learn as he moves forward, his good leaders will teach him the rules and when to question, his fellow privates/Specialists will teach him the tricks, and soon the new privates will be coming to him to learn.

Thanks to the ladies who took the time to answer my post.  It made some things a little more clear for me and my son.

First thing I learned about the military, they are very disorganized. I always expect the worst, nothing ever surprises me now, LOL

When DH graduated from bootcamp, I had to pay for the flight for him to come home on recruiting leave. I paid for the flight for him to go to his duty station. They only reimbursed one of those flights.

What can go wrong, will go wrong with the Army. I'm always pleasantly surprised when they do get something right! LOL

Keep in mind also that alot of admin work is done by civilians and they, at times, can be overwhelmed with paperwork.

"You won, alright? You came in and you killed them and you took their land. That's what conquering nations do. That's what Ceasar did. He's not going around saying 'I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it'. The history of the world is not about making friends. You had better weapons and you massacred them. End of story."  Spike
