I wanted to talk to moms who are enlisted in the military. Recently I Have been interested in going into either the army or air force but I have my doubts. I am heartbroken at the thought of leaving my kids but I do know all the benefits and I feel that they outweigh the bad. I am going to talk to a recruiter but I need advice from mothers who have been through this. Some questions I have are: how did you makes this decision, what is the longest you have been away from your children, does the sacrafice seem worth it?
I am leaning towards enlisting but like I said, I am in need of some serious advice asap.
Thank you all!
I hope someone else has more info :)
1. If you are married, that would bring you to at least 3 dependents; which I believe now requires a waiver. That is tough to get in the days of downsizing.
2. If you aren't married; you would have to give up custody of your children. That is a HUGE decision to have to make.
If you make it passed that, there is a million and one factors that could be go or no go.
As for being a mom in the military? You just do it. I didn't have my daughter until after I joined, but every time I have to leave her; it is like my heart rips out every time. I just pray that someday she will understand why mommy (and daddy) have to leave sometimes, but that we ALWAYS want to be home with her.
Not true... At least in the AF (which she is considering) MOST jobs get cycled through and DO get deployed...
Quoting Poppymary:there is no sacrifice unless your planning on doing an MOS that takes you to a warzone...
most military jobs are not combat, are totally harmless and are just jobs like any other in the civilian world. The only sacrifice is your time from your kids while your at training.
the benefits are totally worth it...job security, free medical/dental, tax free purchases at commisary and PX, college benefits, etc. Your at more risk of commuting to/from work than anything you actually do at work.
I'm in the Army myself, so I'm telling you from firsthand experience. Go for it, and good luck ;) Long term benefits are worth the temporary separation during training

Every MOS will take you to a war zone. There is no "non deploy-able" MOS. If you're in the Army, you should know that.

Quoting Poppymary:most jobs will never take you to combat zones. And yes I do know that. Its always possible, but the chances are quite low for most. Your not gonna send JAG Lawyers, most surgeons, payroll clerks, secretarys, and other white collar type jobs to the front lines. Who are they gonna send first.... an infantryman or a 72Lima secretary girl worried about her nails drying?

Quoting Poppymary:i didnt come here to argue. I'm telling what I know based on my own experiences. And my experience is what I said. Yours is different, goody for you. Doesnt alter what I said. Overall your totally safe and since we're not in any real wars right now , chances are staggeringly high that you will remain safe and sound unless any other major wars break out. Here in Germany, I haven't met anyone that I work with that has been deployed and we're all in support services MOSes.

Wow you know nothing huh? I was deployed with jag, a surgeon, doctors, computer programmers and finance. Please stop while your ahead.

This is false and if you're really in the army you would know that.
There's no such thing as Non-Deployable. Non-Combat jobs sure (technically speaking, everyone in the military is combat trained), but they can and WILL deploy. Because what they're doing over there is a multi-faceted beast that takes many jobs and many people to accomplish. Supplies don't issue or order themselves so supply has to go. Apparating isn't a skill muggles have so Pilots, crew cheifs, flight crews and all those people are going over. All that Ops and admin stuff doesn't do itself, they're going too! Food, water purification, medical, etc etc etc , Everyone goes because the job isn't something any one MOS can do alone.
The ONLY time you are technically non-deployable (and it's just technically, if they need you you're going) is while doing a B billet on Recruiting, DI, or School House Instructor. And then the long ass hours make up for that.

BUT that doesn't mean those mos' were not in country with us. They were, on the bigger FOB's, like Balad. Which means that those mos' were indeed, deployed.
This you would know if you are in the Army, and have ever been deployed. Smh.
