GI Bill.

DH is getting out of the military.  He has been in 9 years.  He doesn't plan on using the GI Bill, and would like to transfer it to me.  The VA benefits briefing said that no spouse/dependant can use your GI bill, Montgomery, or post 9/11.  They said however, if he were to reenlist, he can transfer it to dependants. (because he'd be active duty still, or something like that.)

I have friends whose husbands have gotten out, and transferred their GI bills to their spouses, no problem. (Montgomery, and post 9/11)   They can't remember what forms they filled out, so no help there.  Can someone here help me out, point me in the right direction?

DH has less than a week left AD.

Was there something to the amount of years of retain-ability as well?  Or was that something else...?  I know last year dh said he had a window if he wanted to change his around and after a certain amount of time he wouldn't be allowed to.  (The initial change - I know once he did the initial, he can change the proportions later...)

you can NOT transfer the GI bill to a spouse unless the member is AD and as re enlisted for 4 yrs

Montgumergy GI Bill was the longer you were in the more you got.  If he has been in service for I think 90 days AFTER 9/11 he can put in paper work to change it over to the post 9/11 GI Bill.  They pay tution, and you get BAH for an (I think) E5 for the area your living in.

It's not a dollar amount - they're months...  And he will have to convert what he has now to the post 9/11 bill.  Make sure you weigh all the pros and cons before you just jump into it.  Once he does that, they can tell him how many months he has.  I don't know if the months vary by branch / rank / length of service so I'm not even gonna guess...

can anyone tell me how much is on the POST 9/11 GI BILL?

i might need to use some, hubs has been in for 12 going on 13 years.

but i really wanted to save it for my dd.. if we have alot then i will only have him transfer just a little to me...

EDIT: HUBS WOULDNT HAVE POST 9/11 SINCE HE WAS IN BEFORE 9/11

BUT DOES HIS JUST TURN INTO POST 9/11 OR WHATS THE DIFFERENCE?

the post 9/11 bill is 36 months- it can be divided between any number of dependents-

if the member wants to transfer 12 months to 2 dep and keep 12 months for himself or transfer 12 months to the spouse and 24 months to 1 child ect.

benefits must be transferred to dep before retirement- once retired the retiree can move benefits between recipeints, but cannot ADD recipeints. the member can also cancel benefits at any time even after retirement.
