2nd UPDATE:

One person is dead after a U.S. Navy helicopter with five aboard crashed at sea off Norfolk, Va., Wednesday, the Navy said. Three crew were rescued, and the search for a missing fifth is underway.

The helicopter, a MH-53E Sea Dragon, was on a routine training mission, the Navy said. The cause of the unarmed transport helicopter's crash is under investigation.

The helicopter went down in the Atlantic Ocean 20 miles off the Virginia coast, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Two Navy aircrews hoisted four people from the water and transported them to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Extent of injuries for the three survivors is not known, the Navy said. Their names were not released.

The Coast Guard said it received a call at approximately 11 a.m. reporting the Sea Dragon had crashed and that another Navy aircrew had dropped a life raft to the people in the water.

Petty Officer David Weydert told Yahoo News two Coast Guard ships went to the scene, and one was between 2 and 3 nautical miles from the crash area. Helicopters from the U.S. Navy as well as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Shearwater are participating in the search, Weydert said.

The incident comes a day after four people were killed in a U.S. Air Force helicopter crash off the coast of Norfolk, England, during a "low-level" training exercise. There were no survivors of that crash.

UPDATE:

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The U.S. Coast Guard says four of five people aboard a Navy helicopter that went down in the Atlantic off Virginia have been rescued.

Petty Officer David Weydert says the search continues for the fifth person. Two Coast Guard cutters were racing to the scene Wednesday.

A Navy helicopter rescued the four. Their conditions are not known.

The helicopter has been identified by the Navy as an MH-53-E. According to the Naval Air Systems Command website, the aircraft performs airborne mine countermeasures and onboard delivery missions.

Reposted from Epoch Times

A U.S. Navy CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter crashed off the coast of Norfolk, Virginia on Wednesday.

A search and rescue is underway, the Navy said via Twitter.

The crash happened about 18 miles off the coast, AP reported.

There were five people on board, and all are in the water, local broadcaster WVEC reported, citing the Coast Guard. Patrol boat Shearwater, out of Portsmouth, and a smaller boat from Station Little Creek are responding, as well as a fireboat from Virginia Beach.

The Navy has a base in Norfolk, the Naval Station Norfolk, also known as NS Norfolk or the Norfolk Naval Base. It’s the world’s largest naval station, supporting 75 ships and 134 aircraft.

The CH-53E Super Stallion has been used in a range of missions, and “has been in incredibly high demand,” the Navy says on its website. However, it’s currently out of production.

It typically carries a crew of four.
