Hi everyone,
My little girl has a trach and she wasn't felling very well yesterday. I took her to her doctor and he said that she has a tracheitis. He prescribed her prednisolone and antibiotic for a nebulizer. I just want to see if any of you had any experience with tracheitis and what should I expect.
Thanks!
Oh tracheitis..... I dont know if your daughter is the same because everyone is different but it just seemed like she always had it! We couldnt get rid of it. We asked our pulm if it was something we were doing and he said no they just get it because it's a foreign object in a moist dry part of their body and their bodies are trying to fight it so they get infections really easily in the trach. Did they put you on Toby for it? The toby is pretty potent stuff. If your daughter is prone to hearing loss then talk to your dr. My best friends daughter had a trach too (we met in the NICU) and her daughter had mild hearing loss and they put her on toby and over the past year she went to severe hearing loss, my daughter had no issues with it though. Our dr ended up putting Emma on the nebulizer antibiotic for a month on and a month off so that we could catch it in case she started getting it. He told us "its like mowing a lawn, you have to maintain it so it doesnt get out of control". Tracheitis pretty much is just something that comes with having a trach (unfortunately), but after we started the month on month off thing it really seemed to help her so I would ask your dr about that. Hope this helps!
PS.. Your daughter is beautiful :-)

Thanks so much for responding so fast!
Nicole has been with trach 6 months and this is the first time we have problems. She fells much more better today, no fever, her appetite and energy are back. How long it usually takes the infection to go away and what are exactly the symptoms?
Your daughter is very cute too.
My son Skyler is 6 now, but when he was 7months old was hospitalized for Trachiitis...I am sorry you are dealing with this. Just keep her hydrated and on the nebulizer. He was in the hospital for 3 days and other times hes had it we have managed to keep him home. To you or I it would be a really bad cold...but since its an open airway, it looks bigger and badder. Good luck and take it easy!! This will be a great time for some cuddly couch time :)

You're welcome. Emmas infections usually started improving within a couple days of starting the meds. The first thing we usually noticed was the trach secretions changed color and there was a lot more of them than normal. She coughed a lot more too. The second we noticed any of that we started the meds again.
My daughter did the same thing, she had the trach put in feb of 07 and we had no issues until nov when respiratory season hit. Respiratory season is so hard on them, like they need thing to be harder...
