Deuteronomy 8:3-9 (New International Version)
“He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.”
Christi and I met some friends for sushi today. Man it was good! I don’t eat it all the time, but when I do, I like to go with my friends Rob and Llolanda. They are what I call local experts of sushi. Rob even brings his own chopsticks. I mean these things are neat. They have metal handles and wood tips that screw on the ends. Rob is a serious hard core sushi man. He has a picture of a sushi bar in Miami on his cell phone. The dude is serious. The lunch was fabulous and the company too. I walked away full and satisfied.
Though I am full, eventually I will be hungry again. Food is needed to survive, but to truly live as God wants us to, we must go beyond the sushi bar and into what truly brings us life – God’s Word. In our text, God is telling the Israelites that the desert experience was to humble them to make them hungry for what really counts in life - GOD. Humbleness causes us to hunger. God has brought me through many deserts in my lifetime that have made me hungry for Him. I have come to the end of myself to find that only God truly satisfies. Man does not live on the bread alone, but on every and I emphasize every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Jesus quoted this same verse in the desert when tempted by Satan to turn stones into bread. Jesus had fasted 40 days and was hungry. Jesus didn’t overcome Satan by making a buffet appear. He overcame Satan by going to the dining hall of heaven and feasting on what God says. Jesus did warfare by feeding His spirit not His flesh. We like Jesus experience times of desert warfare. These are dry times in our life that God uses to feed us and the enemy uses to defeat us. What we decide to feed on in these times will determine our outcome. When our back is against the wall in life, we don’t need another cheeseburger. We don’t need another drink. We don’t need a cigarette, box of Twinkies or the Snickers bar to calm our nerves. What we do need is the Word of God! What does God say about our situation? It is in these times we need God’s Word spoken to our hearts.
Remember, on the other side of the desert is your promise land. Your victory is just around the corner and the enemy would love to distract you with his taco bar. Don’t fall for it. Say, “Get behind me Satan!” and keep walking in God’s Word. Allow His Word to be your lamp to your feet and the light to your path. Keep observing His commands, obey them and walk according to them. God is leading you forward and is feeding your spirit along the way! Oh, and if you get the chance to eat some sushi, ask Rob to come along. His chopsticks are ready. Enjoy the journey!
