Snowdrift Trouble

1 Corinthians 13:3 (New International Version)

“If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.”

The wind was cold and blowing snow as I was begging my dog Bandit to be quick in doing his job.  As I waited I saw a big snow drift blocking the driveway.   When I came inside my wife asked me how it was outside.  As Bandit and I walked to my office for prayer and his bone, I told Christi the roads looked fine, but there was a big snowdrift in the driveway.  That was it.  I was heading to the holy mountain to meet with God and Christi was left there scratching her head.

The kids got up, ate breakfast and got their things together for school.  I came out of prayer focused on the day ahead.  The man of God had come out of the “tent of meeting”.  A full agenda was ahead of me and Christi asked if I would take the kids to school.  I looked at her and said, “Honey, I am running behind and it would help me if you could take the kids so I can get ready.”  Again, I went off to the bedroom to get ready and Christi stood there scratching her head.  (Some of you are starting to get mad at me aren’t you?)  Now God has a great sense of humor.  I had just jumped into the nice hot shower lathering up the hair with shampoo when my son walks in and yells, “Mom is stuck in the snow drift!”  Have you ever had the “Why didn’t I shovel the snow drift” moment?  That was me with a head full of shampoo.  The man of God was clean on the  outside, but my heart was beginning to stink.

I quickly rinsed off, put on clothes and ran out the door to help.  The look on my wife’s face said it all.  Yep, I was in a snow drift amount of trouble.  I was losing traction with my wife like the car was in the drift.  We pushed her through and the last thing I heard was, “Why didn’t you shovel the drive when you saw there was a drift?”  While Christi was gone I thought of a lot of excuses why I didn’t do it, but  none would hold water.  I saw the need, but didn’t take the action.  I also didn’t see how the action would minister to my wife.  She gave me time to figure it out, but I was too busy taking care of myself.  I also failed to remember that I had two teenage boys that could have got out of bed and shoveled the drive for us.  That would have been the best plan now that I think of it.

Can you imagine the points I would have scored if I would have gotten up early with the motive to take care of others?  That is true love.   Love is not going through the motions physically or spiritually.  Who cares how long I prayed.  I did not love.  Love was nowhere near me.  I can see God the whole time I was “seeking” Him pointing to the snow drift.  I looked godly, but acted different.  Love is action with the pure motive to help others.  Love is seeing the need and wanting to meet it.  Love is thoughtful and makes the effort to find out what would help someone else.  My warning today would be to take care of the snow drifts when you see them.  Love others as you serve them.  You will enjoy your hot shower a lot more if you do.
